Tribune investigation prompts stores to pull food items
"Five ways to protect yourself and your family from products with dangerous allergens" By Sam Roe and Ted Gregory | Tribune reporters December 20, 2008
Have a look at this article by following the above link. The Chicago Tribune did an independant study of products and found labeling on many products to be misleading and to have actually contained gluten. When you read, that a product is 'free' of a particular allergen, you expect it to not contain any of that item. Kudos to Sam Roe and Ted Gregory, this will hopefully make many more food manufacturers aware of how important it is to have allergen/intolerance safe foods with appropriate labeling.
This is one more reason I have made most of our foods from scratch over the past more than 15 years on a gluten free diet. Because often we would buy a product, try it, have a reaction and wonder why. I would read a label over and over and scratch my head as to why one or more of us could have had a reaction when there is nothing on the label that could have indicated something else might be contained in it.
Many of us are also worried that manufacturers will just put all kinds of "may contain" notices on products that are really safe in order to protect themselves. This is understandable too, and yet, it should be possible to have accurate food production and labeling. As more people are made aware, I'm sure it will help. Eating is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Although, eating can and should be a luxurious experience in my opinion, even on a gluten free diet.
